Tutorial
Step 1: Draw out or print out a pattern of the shells and cut it out.
You will need to have the shape of the shells on paper, so either draw them out yourself, or find a clear reference picture, blow it up, and print it out. I drew mine out (not too well) by hand on white paper and cut them out. I drew my shells with 5 sections/scallops. I then used that as my pattern for the rest of the project. On each section I labelled the L1-L5 (for the left shell) and R1-R5 (for the right shell).
Step 2: Trace the shell pattern on craft foam.
Use your pattern to make trace the two shells out of craft foam. You can try making the shells into one whole thing, or cut out the individual 5 sections. I think molding the 5 individual pieces over the bra is a lot easier than trying to mold one giant shell. It is all about preference, so take your pick. I personally did the 5 individual sections. So you should have 2 sets of 5 pieces of craft foam. You can see the 5 pieces for my right shell below.
Step 3: Get to pieces of Worbla for ever piece of craft foam and sandwich them together (you should have a piece that goes Worbla-craft foam- Worbla). Heat the 3 layers together with a heat gun to seal them up. Watch Kamui Cosplay's video on how to do this for a better visual guide.
Step 4: Once all your pieces are sanwhiched in between Worbla, it is time to heat them up again and shape them against the strapless bra! This part was the most time consuming and the most frustrating. It will take a bit of time and a lot of heating up! Just take your time with each piece. It was my first time attempting anything like this, and I had a pretty hard time doing it. But it's all trial an error, so don't be upset if your project doesn't end up looking perfect.
Step 5: Once you finish heating up and molding the worbla pieces on thew bra, hot glue any pieces that might not be totally secure on the bra. The Worbla will stick to the bra, but some pieces might not be 100% secure. You don't want the shell falling off in the middle of a con!
Step 6: Woodglue!! Prime the Worbla shells with a few layers of woodglue. Woodglue doesn't require sanding and it only takes about 4-6 coats to get a smooth surface! You can apply it with a brush or even with your fingers.
Step 7: Paint!! Gather up your choice of pink or coral acrylic paints and start painting!~ I can't really tell you what colors I used because I made a weird concoction of a bunch of different colors. I also made a slightly darker pink to go around the edges of the scallops to give the shells more dimension.
Step 8: Seal it! Acrylic paint tend to chip, so make sure to seal your work with an acrylic sealer! And after that you're all done!
See you next time ^_^
