Hello Generation of Cosplayers!
DarthNancy here ^_^
As you may have seen, Tuesdays are going to be Tip Tuesdays, days where we will offer general cosplay advice. Thursdays, however, will officially be What-No-To-Do Thursdays! This is going to be a segment where Discorda and I offer advice on what NOT to do. We have both learned a lot through trial and error, and we wish to share our bad experiences with you guys so you don't have to go through them!
Today's topic will be... what not to do when using expandable foam!
Expandable foam is used freuqnetly by cosplayers for making props. Discorda used it when she made her Slay Belle Katarina daggers, and I used it when I made my Yamuraiha staff. It is a really inexpensive way to make props, and I highly recommend it for cosplay projects. However, you need to be really careful when using this stuff!
DO NOT use expandable foam without wearing gloves! I repeat, DO NOT use expandable foam without wearing gloves! Discorda learned that lesson firsthand when she got expandable foam all over her hands. I have also gotten some on my hands, and let me tell you it is unpleasant. It didn't do anything crazy, but it is still not great having this sticky foam on your skin. It is really difficult to get off, and it looks really ugly too! If you do get expandable foam on your hands, you can rub flour on your hands to get some of the foam off. The rest will come off on its on after a while. Below is a picture of what the foam looked like on Discorda's hand:
Ideally, you should wear gloves and protective eye wear. You should also protect your work surface by placing plastic over it. Make sure you read the directions for anything you use and take precautions for your own safety. Cosplay is creative and fun, but working with hazardous materials can be dangerous, so please be careful.
Second round of expandable foam and we learned our lesson about wearing gloves! |
So what did we learn today? If you are going to be using expandable foam make sure to protect your hands by using gloves (and protective eye wear for your peeps!).
See you next time ^_^
